As the eldest Cartwright brother. Adam is well educated and acts his father's right hand. Born in his grandfather's house in Boston MA. Adam travels with his father across the United States after the death of his mother. They eventually settle in territory known now as Lake Tahoe where he helps build and run the Ponderosa Ranch with his two younger brothers Hoss and Little Joe. Compared to his younger brothers Adam is serious and thoughtful a distinction evident even in his wardrobe. While many westerns dress their villains in all black. Adam wears the color almost exclusively. whether it's an all black outfit or an accented black vest or hat.

Pernell Roberts famously left the show after 200 episodes and his character was only mentioned a few times during the show's run. It's well known that Roberts (a seasoned theater actor) was unhappy with scheduling demands of a network television show as well as the lack of character development. After leaving the show during its 6th season. Pernell returned to the stage and appeared in various film and television roles.
